Latest sports science for runners
Megan Kernis

I’m an endurance runner and student journalist.
Every run I set out on, I find myself asking questions about my training, my community, or the environment around me. By combining new research and daily experiences, I aim to distinguish the complexity between science-based practice and the reality of implementation.

Long-distance runner; ex- field hockey player

Scientist
Conducted research at Yale; working towards a degree in the biological sciences
Athlete, Writer, and Scientist I am a sophomore student studying molecular, cellular, and developmental biology at Yale University with interests in global health and journalism. I have written for various student-run publications as well as the Yale School of Public Health. I have conducted metabolic research in the Jonas Lab and placental research at the Kliman Lab at the Yale School of Medicine, and I am the social chair for Yale Club Running.
I began running in 2022 to condition for the field hockey season but quickly fell in love with long-distance running. I ran my first marathon in the spring of 2023 and have since fallen down the rabbit hole of ultramarathons. I plan and train based off my own research which has led to an abundance of research journals, podcasts, and YouTube videos all advocating different advice. I hope to combine research with real experiences – both of which can be misleading on their own – to influence other runners to personalize their training in a similar way and offer a real voice in the face of medal-focused media.

Summer Training: Heat Acclimation
How to adjust to the summer heat without major changes to your training. The sound of cicadas cuts through the air while the sun beams relentlessly through fresh leaves and into the blacktop of familiar roads. Meanwhile, a mapped trail, faded from months of a similar sun’s persistence, prepares for the tenacity of athletes from…
